I've recently heard some highly interesting stories about the Scorpion light tank in combat.

Sadly, my knowledge to this topic (tanks and land warfare) is poor, and the contact to the source of such short duration, that I could now badly need some additional opinions.

For example, one of the things which were new to me about the Scorpion was that this tank should be able to move even without tracks - only on the four rollers, which should be powered. Is this truth?

Furthermore, there should be some kind of a machine-gun, or 20mm cannon, that could be put into the barrel of the 60mm gun, thus changing the nature of the whole vechile, and making it capable to fight even helicopters and aircraft with automatic fire. Is that truth, and what kind of weapon should this be (i.e. anybody else ever heard about such installation?)?

Finally, it was said to me that with some "slight technical changes" (ie. a removal of some part of the engine), the Scorpion could run no less but up to 120km/h (on the road, of course) and climb 70% slopes. To be honest, I tend to trust the source, but what kind of a "part of engine" should this be?

Oh, and anybody with a general idea how that 60mm gun should perform against such tanks like T-55?

Many thanks in advance,
Tom

Never seen that on any RARDEN I have worked with, good guess' Chris but neither applicable. Only thing I can think of is that it may have been used in trials in development and filled a space!!!

Thanks Sabre I could be FoS but could the 'space gun' marking be a 'pinch hazard' warning - to keep your hand out of that space because depression of the gun would otherwise crush it?

Alternatively, could it mean that you need to check the headspacing on the gun before you shoot it?

They may be wrong though. Anyway I now have the operation manual on the way to me which should tell us.

Stuart – a copy of the Fox gunnery manual would be very useful, thanks very much.

Over Christmas when I get some time I am going to upload all the ces, manuals, photos etc that I have to http://groups.yahoo.com/group/cvrtw/
if anyone’s interested.

Charlie

Ok mate, remind me after christmas and Ill email you a pdf on cd. Incidentally, if anyone gets a gunnery manual on Scimitar, Striker or Scorpion, Im in the market

Doesn't the chain gun shoot standard 7.62x51 NATO in M13 disintegrating links? If so it comes in 200 round rectangular steel boxes:

For a short time I commanded a Spartan and was fleet manager for a mortar pl. I do not remember ever seeing links on CESs. I do not remember even having them on the veh. In the 5 years I was mech I cannot remember ever changing a link. We changed pads and in one case in 1979 we changed all the 432 tracks in the Bn at the same time, but never a link. From memory the 43 had 94 and was condemned when it reached 89. The CVR(T) had 110? And I think could go to 100 before condemning it. And as I think of the CESs on the shelves links never appeared. They may have been held by the QM in a central pool i.e. with every 10 veh you get a track.

Here's a page of info about Alvis's successor to the Scorpion, the Stormer 30. The basic Stormer is a stretched Spartan (extra roadwheel), but for the Stormer 30 it's lowered, producing a Scorpion-like profile. I don't know if anybody's bought it, but I suspect not.

Charlie, thats one fine looking machine. You have obviously done a lot of work on it.Thanks for posting the Pictures up on my page.Let me know if you take it to beltring, I could do with recording a few sounds of it running. It could be quite useful for a few guys I know working on a future project.

Incidentally, other than the Coax, is there many changes inside the turret from the Fox? If not, I can PDF a Fox gunnery manual for you if its any use.it has some details of the RARDEN.Though it looks like you already have it finished
