NATO wasn't the Warsaw Pact, though, with the Soviet Union shoving the AK design down everyone's throat.

Czech, as only one with considerable arms manufacturing industry in WP did not use AK, PKM or Dragunov.

Had to give up the 7.62 x 45 mm though.

Just as Brits had to give up 7mm...

Not entirely true wink.gif True for AK, however:
PK is used in vehicles (even locally manufactured) and often on external mounts - for example even now with our spec forces in A-stan. Even though there is vehicle variant of vz.59, that was never produced.
Dragunov is used - dunno when exactly it was bought but it was already in bad ol' days and SVD and SVDS are still in use in most regular units. Only in special units they are dissolved in usual mix of various marksman/sniper rifles.

Talking about FALs - has anyone here ever shot 7mm FAL? If so how does it feel? I like FAL, but as someone initially trained for AK, it just feels unnecessarily bulky and cumbersome and I keep thinking "man, if it only was in slightly less powerful calibre..."

Stupid question time:

Could someone explain the difference between "Inch" and "Metric" pattern FAL-type rifles? I've never been able to find an "idiot's guide" to these two terms.

Then there are small ergonomic differences...inch pattern FALs have folding cocking lever, safety lever is larger, rear sight is folding, bolt-holding devices function is reversed.

IIRC I read somewhere that the FN-FAL is smoother to shoot (slightly less recoil) than the G3 (which I used during my compulsory military service), but I leave judgement to those who have actually fired both rifles.

IMHO the 7.62x51mm is too powerful for a rifle like the G3. It's controllable during semi-automatic fire, but certainly not during fully-automatic fire.

OTOH though, if your rifle doesn't have iron sights, doesn't kick like a mule and doesn't produce black and blue marks on your shoulder, it's not a true rifle anyway. laugh.gif

Tomas, I think you've just stated the test criteria used by the US, but far more succinctly then they ever did...

My L1A1 Inch pattern on a DSA receiver has the SUIT sight on it. Dailed in 200 yards, Domestic range don't ya know. Thumper of a gun. Breaking cinder blocks at 200 yards. wink.gif Sight is nice. Too bad it doesn't have the tritium insert. dry.gif
