QUOTE
(CNN) -- Lighthouse keeper J.A. Eckerman was the last person to see World War II Soviet submarine S-2 before it sank in January 1940 between Sweden and Finland.

As the submarine dove near the island of Market, northwest of Aland, Eckerman heard a loud explosion and saw smoke rise from the water.

The long-lost wreck was missing for 69 years until a team of Swedish and Finnish divers -- including Eckerman's grandson Ingvald -- discovered it this year.

What remains of the sub was found between the Swedish coast and the Finnish island of Aland, northeast of Stockholm, in late February, the divers announced Tuesday.

Dunno why a find in late February took this long to get reported here in the States.

From the article, it sounds like a pretty direct hit from the mine.

Well, at 1940 subs weren't all that big asfaik Russians didn't make theirs for Ocean use anyway, so hit into subs nose and torpedoes may detonate and after that there is no way to save that sub. And about that article: It is news here too, right now.

WotinHell were they doing diving in the Baltic in February? Did they dive through holes in the ice? Can we spell H - Y - P - O - T - H - E - R - M - I - A, people?

I knew Finns and Swedes were crazy, but that's ridiculous.....

Well, in the summer we might be talking about 4 degrees Celsius if you get fairly deep,
so winter is not that much colder (below water that is).

The issue is getting stuck under the ice
(ice is rarely a problem in those part of the Baltic sea these days)
and more importantly, the respirator frezzing up.

Wearing a drysuit should be obvious.

Colder seasons also mean better vis underwater, the price you pay for diving up here.
