Late in WW2 the LW used draft animals to move a/c around (ie to take off positions) to save fuel and presumably because there was not enough fuel for tow vehicles.

The question I have is how prevalent was the use of draft animals in the LW early in the war? Also, were draft animals used because of a lack of tow vehicles late war?
