Full Version: What aircraft type is this?

From the context where I found it, it is apparently Vietnam in '57. Looks kinda' like a mini-Typhoon or something, or based on some Brit design. Anybody know what this is?

Looks like an SU 5

Maybe, but most images I'm finding show SU-5 as four-bladed and with bigger intake, different nose.

...it looks more "YAK"ish, but none of these are a fit either...(lot's of interesting aircraft here, though)

I agree and on closer inspection it looks like it has a closely cowled radial or cowl as on the Fw190D. It isn't of course. It is also possible (probable?) that it is a turbo-prop.

No idea. But looking at the SU-5 was educational for me...it's both convention reciprocating engine and jet powered, apparently. Never seen that type before either.

The lower intake cowl on the plane I posted question about looks like liquid cooling system housing, to my eyes. So I'm thinking reciprocating.

Was thinking Su-2 or Su-4, but it doesn't look like either one. Something French, maybe?

The same as a Su-2, but with another engine. Or so I've read. smile.gif

When did the Thunderbirds become inspiration for real technology, between this and the piloted A-4 rockets? (I know, its the other way around)

I don't know whats more amazing/unbelievable/stark raving mad: if German late WW2 projects if Soviet Cold War projects (thinking wing-in-ground effect things mainly, although those worked) blink.gif
Oh, and Western non-Harrier VSTOL attempts also fit that mould, IMO. Even the VJ-101, a cool looking plane as it is, but completely absurd. All of this in hindsight of course. wink.gif

edit: forgot there is more than one flavor of A-4 smile.gif

Did anyone see the TUPOLEV TU-2SH with 88 submachine guns in the bomb bay? Obviously of little practical use,
but the 88x900= 79200 rounds per minute has to be some kind of record!

Instead of the 88 PPSHs they should have put there a 106mm RR laugh.gif for TankNet's own Air Force.
What would the plane's crew do when the drums on the SMGs were empty?

Obviously Tank-nets airforce can not incorporate such puny 106mm sparktastic delusions.

What we really need is the Gerat 104 356mm aircraft mounted recoilless anti-ship cannon!!!

More that the proliferation of nutters though history is rather consistent... tongue.gif
Skorzeny
The nutters were way better back in the day!

Back in the day they where nutcase visionaries advocating 1500 ton land battleship, 356mm recoilless rifles on aircraft, 80cm cannons and vunderwaffen allround.

Now its OLD 106mm RR, OLD M113s with new names, OLD battleships, OLD 8inch NGS concepts...

Seems our nutters are as nutty as ever, but they truly lack a vision or just any creativity.

Its a sad day for humanity laugh.gif laugh.gif laugh.gif

Never seen them before, but I'd be very confident in saying that they are CGI. There is a few little things like all of the "stuff" around the aircraft is in the exact same place despite the aircraft being in a different location in the two photos, but mostly it is the sharp shadows from the window frames. Sunlight does not behave as though it comes from a point like source.
Luke Y
The first one is plainly a fake, the second one, a scan of a magazine article is more difficult to tell but the lines of the aircraft are in such a way as can only be described as 'drawn' or 'modelled' rather than 'made'.

Too smooth, too slick.
