Grenade camera to aid UK troops

QUOTE
A "grenade" camera, that would enable soldiers to look into hazardous areas, is being developed for UK troops.

Dubbed the I-Ball the wireless device is robust enough to survive being thrown onto a battlefield.

The I-Ball's internal camera gives a 360 degree view, with images being sent from the instant it is launched.

It is thought the new technology would enable soldiers to see into potential danger spots without putting themselves at risk of ambush.

The ball can be fired from a grenade launcher - or thrown into a room - giving troops vital information of who - or what - is on the ground or around the corner.

Inside the sphere are image sensors and two fish-eye lenses. The data is then sent back and remapped through a type of processor known as a Field Programmable Gate Array which compensates for spin and tumble and then displays a true 360 image in real time.

The concept came about as part of the Ministry of Defence's (MoD) Competition of Ideas in 2007.

Paul Thompson, from Scotland-based firm Dreampact, which is developing the I-Ball, said that although the gadget was still in the early stages of development, he had high hopes of it being able to perform well on the battlefield.

"We have overcome some significant technological challenges in developing the I-Ball technology," he said.

"Although it is in its early stages, we are very excited about the technology's potential to help our troops to be better prepared for battle. "

The MOD's director of technology development - Professor Andrew Baird - also sounded a positive note.

"The technology behind I-Ball is an exciting new development that has very significant potential across a range of military equipment and operational scenarios, particularly in difficult urban operations," he said.

That is pretty cool. Not nearly as macho or satisfying as just fragging or flashbanging each room or trouble spot, but still neat from a techie point of view.

+1 on the neat idea! Choosing which widgets to haul along is getting to be a major leadership challenge. Which will be the battlefield innovation that breaks the infantryman's back?

What if they keep it for vehicles only? on a matter of cost, its probably also better to use them to defend vehicles.

Wouldn't a bigger version for 60-81mm mortars be more useful?

better yet, a pack of six from a mortar on a vehicle, linked or stuff to make a composite view. kinda a cheap UAV.

It sounds like a good idea for those not on the sharp end. The mere fact of something strange flying into any room will alert the bad guys that they should expect somebody to come bursting in. Most squaddies will think that HE is a better way of clearing a room safely(For them anyway) leaving identifing the body parts to somebody else.

I vote in this order Flashbang, pressure grenade and fragg in front of this invention...those other are all lot more versatile in combat then the camera thing - besides camera thing will be too expensive to never get enough of them

I read somewhere that the first tested variant will be the mortar variant for 60mm

The only use for the squaddies i see is to determine wether NOT to burst in at all, when thereīs just too many of them enemies or there are civvies. i gather you could determine that through other less costly sources.

The had this on the television series 'Future weapons' on discovery channel. Interesting looking system, showed it being thrown round corners and down stairs, and the system took account of whether it was upside down or no and fliped the image on the screen.

Its true that it is largely an active system, but if you are entering a house that might have civilians in it, it strikes me as a better way to clear the room than chuck a grenade in, particularly if you have the back door covered. I also wonder what the battery life is. It would be useful to have something like this disguised as a rock so you could perhaps use it as a sentry system.

Incidentally, I think the same programme showed a round for the grenade launcher used by the USMC (M32?) that could put a round up in the air with a camera on it. I imagine that could prove quite useful in some urban fights. Putting it on the 60mm mortar that the army are soon to acquire would be even more useful.

Same goes for breaking the suspension; plus where will the troops go? I understand that Brads, Strykers and Humvees are all getting very cramped due to the new tech.

I'm not saying that thsi new camera is a "bad thing," just that there are so many "good things."

what about restricting it to vehicles that already have the capacity to fire that kind of ammo?
