Here's an article from Military.com discussing the USMC's decision to allow Marines to shoot (some) qualifications with the issue scope. From reading the article and discussion, it seems as if this is in addition to qualifying with iron sights; it sounds like good training to me.

Are Marines issued BUIS's (Back-Up Iron Sights) with their scopes?

That's not the way it reads to me. It seems like they were allowing Marines to fire their annual qualifications with optics, but not take any increases in scores, just carry over the previous year's score and call it good. Now they're allowing scores with optics to be recorded in the Marines' service records.

“It’s a good thing,” said Chief Warrant Officer 2 Allen Young, the station's marksmanship training officer. “Deploying units on the tip of the spear have RCOs and vertical grips attached to their weapons already. This helps get them familiar with these systems they’ll be using in country.”

Not sure i agree. Iron sights should be base line qualification. Use of issue CCO should be shot long and often for familiararity in addition to annual qual.

Shouldn't one qualify as they would use the weapon? Perhaps part of the qualification should be at night as well. Use both optics and iron sights, day and night.
