Guys:

Yet another question RE: the MP5 SMG; not only is it VERY popular in real live but it seems to be REAL popular in the movies; yet watching being used I have a question:
The MP-5 (and maybe even ALL H&K Long Guns) seem to have a bolt mechanism that locks back when the you're out of ammo & in many movies (For EX: the first Die Hard) the user seems to give that bolt that little 'slap' with the palm of the hand to chamber a round---so: Does it hurt to 'give it a whack?'

The MP5 does not have a bolt hold open. When you have any stoppage or if the gun runs dry, your first action is to hook the charging back into the detent and roll the gun gun to have a glance into the ejection port to see if you can see brass.
When you're done either reloading or clearing, you then chop the handle to left and down out of the detent slot and allow the bolt assembly to slam forward and into battery.

So no, it doesn't hurt and it is in fact the correct way to do it. If you ride the handle, i.e. hold onto it, you run the risk of slowing the whole process down and causing a misfeed.

The MP5/10 and possibly the MP5/40 included a bolt hold open device.

Ah...thanks; so there is no "MP-5" Palm, like there is an "M1 Thumb";

According to the manual I got with my HK91, the problem with riding the bolt home was a failure to lock.

Judging by my 91, the G3 was a well designed, rugged, and accurate rifle. But the lack of a bolt catch and the inability to adjust sights without tools (you can't even use the point of a projectile, like on the M16A1) are serious drawbacks to us of Sam, who are used to such things on their weapons.
