OK, here is the newest version of the NATO OOB:

NATO OOB Mk VII

Major updates for this edition include a completely new Austrian OOB and a re-work of the FRG OOB, with vast details on the TerritorialHeer. Additionally, dozens of smaller changes have been made.

The gaping hole here remains the French OOB -- it still remains mostly the same as that of the original document, although it has been expanded upon.

Man, when you said the next version'd gonna be shockingly comprehensive, you weren't joking. You're owing my paper half an office day spent on reading this. biggrin.gif

Some of my earlier guesstimates on helicopter numbers, since revised, appear to have sneaked into the current version. All Heeresflieger regiments had five VBHs, not four, and my last BGS chopper list looks like this:

- 33 SA 318 C Alouette II
- 15 Bell UH-1D
- 10 Bell 212
- 22 SA 330 J Puma
- 3 AS 332 L1 Super Puma
- 17 BO-105

Heeresfliegerstaffel 4 appears twice, once under 5th PzDiv (should be HFlgStff 5, of course). Also the Stabsstaffel of each Heeresfliegerkommando is missing their "el" end. There are various other small spelling and grammatical mistakes in German words and location names; for instance, the plural of "Zug" is "Züge", but it's mostly petty stuff. I can make a list sometime when no further additions appear to be forthcoming.

The brigade engineer companies would have the same number as their respective brigade with a 0 added (e.g., Panzerpionierkompanie 10 for PzGrenBrig 1).

Since you have listed the replacement battalions of the corps and territorial army, will you add those of the divisions too? Might become a little unwieldy though with five each (x1 through x5, preceding the respective Jäger/security battalions in numbers).

I'll get these changes made later today and updated. I probably should add something on the replacement battalions; I think a decent compromise would be in the notes section.

Thanks,

Pat

Boawww !!!
Really good work!!!

Some remarks on the German Orbat:

- The Flugabwehrkommando of 3rd GE Corps is located in Koblenz
- Heeresfliegerstaffel 5 of 5th Panzerdivision is located in Mendig
- Staff of 5th Panzerdivision is in Diez (Lahn is a river flewing through Diez)
- Brückenpionierbataillon 170 of 1st GE Corps and 270 of 2nd GE Corps are reserve units only
- The Feldersatzbataillon of the Luftlandebrigade 27 is FErsBtl 140, of LLBrig 25 is FErsBtl 240 and of LLBrig 26 is FErsBtl 340

I think I can clear up some more points.

Some notes on Spain:

*All the M48s were already M48A5E2
*The M41 were mostly retired by 1987, although a small number survived into 1989-1990
* All the M113s were virtual M113A1 as the small number of petrol powered M113 were upgraded in the 70s to diesel engines becoming A1
* The 90mm AA were long retired by 1989.
* Correct designation for the Spanish Mirage III is Mirage IIIEE

Still some odd stuff around 143 and 160 Bdes.

The full names of all Bdes are:

2 (Southeast) Infantry Brigade (drawn down from a regular bde, hence the odd numbering)
15 (Yorkshire) Infantry Brigade (numbered after the 15th (Yorkshire) Inf Bde of WW2, which encompased Bns of all 3 Yorkshire Ridings)
42 (Northwest) Infantry Brigade
43 (Wessex) Infantry Brigade - SW approximating the Wessex borders (as far east as Hampshire)
49 (Eastern) Infantry Brigade
51 (Highland) Infantry Brigade
52 (Lowland) Infantry Brigade
54 (East Anglian) Infantry Brigade
56 (London) Infantry Brigade
107 (Ulster) Infantry Brigade (Numbered for 1st Brigade, Ulster Volunteer Division (107 Bde, 36 Div on Mob in 1914)
143 (West Midlands) Infantry Brigade (no Light)
160 (Welsh) Infantry Brigade

1 R Welsh at Warminster is in 143 Bde
1 Welsh Gds in London is 56 Bde
4 RGJ in London is 56 Bde
6 LI is 43 (Wessex) Inf Bde
3 and 6 R Anglian are 54 Inf Bde
There should be a Regular Bn in 52 Inf Bde (at Edinburgh), this is 1 KOSB (18d, unassigned)

In fact while I'm at it, all the 18's are:

a, b and c: 56 (London) Infantry Bde
d: 52 (Lowland) Inf Bde
e: 1 RRF is with 1 WFR in 3 Inf Bde in Northern Ireland, see below for the *permanent* (i.e. 2 year tour) units in the province
"2nd b": 2 LI is the UK based Bn of 6 Bde
f: 143 (West Midlands) Inf Bde at Bovington, Catterick and Warminster
g and h: UK based recce for 3 Div
i: 1 Arty Bde
j: UK based AD for 3 Div

20a: 56 Inf Bde
20b: 143 Inf Bde
20c: 42 Inf Bde
20d: 43 Inf Bde

23: There is a Bde HQ for these, I can't remember the no though. Hang on, 22 and 23 are the same thing and should be merged.

Headquarters, Northern Ireland

3rd Infantry Brigade (Omagh, UK)
1st Battalion, Worcestershire and Sherwood Foresters (Omagh, UK)

Some more remarks to the german ORBAT:

The information about the FERsBtl's of the Luftlande Brigades is from the following book:
"Fallschirmjäger, Die Geschichte der 1. Luftlandedivision 1956 - 1994"

Most of the divisional Engineer Battalions are still showing the wrong equipment (Though the right one is listed in the notes).

The Heimatschutzregiment had at first 10 106 mm Recoiless Rifles but by the time 1988 / 1989 this has changed to 7 tanks M48A2C. The tanks were not in the battalions but in an AT-platoon which was part of the "Stabskompanie" of the Regiment.

Also in the Heimatschutzbrigades the Jagdpanzer Kanone had been replaced by M48 of different kinds (A2C or A2G2).

FErsBtl's 610 and 620 are listed as part of TerrKdo Schleswig-Holstein and as part of WBK II.
TerrKdo S-H is correct.

Panzergrenadierbtl. 113 (of PG Brig 11 / 4. PG Div.) and Panzergrenadierbtl. 192 (of PG Brig 19 / 7 Pz Div.) are marked as may not been existed. They did exist. 113 was in Cham and 192 was in Ahlen.

All of the divisional Artillerieregiments had a third battalion called "Beobachtungsbataillon".
The number of this battalion was the number of the regiment plus a "3", so the Beobachtungsbataillon of Artillerieregiment 10 had the number 103.

Gents,

Wouldn't it be easier to put all of this into an MSExcel spreadsheet format, with each countries services or commands on one sheet?

With as many changes as there are, it appears it would be easier. Once set up, all Pat has to do is announce what changes there are then the readers download/print out just the changes and they update the files.

I'm working on correcting/expanding the US Strategic Air Command [for you Major Kong/Duke Nuke'em types] (during breaks on the Byleorussian MD), so I'll try that format and see how it works.

Hi Pat, great job as usual!
I just checked the italian army and it seems some things have been lost here and there. I acn't upload the file (same problem as for Konev?), so I paste them here. It's a bit long though, and format goes to hell... Some of the following are already in your last version, I repeat them hoping it helps to find them.
This won't ever end, will it? rolleyes.gif

Gents,

I have created a test file for the US Strategic Air Command (7th and 42nd Divisions, 8th Air Force).

[DAMM, DAMM, DAMM Still cannot attach/upload files]
[WILL SOMEBODY CONTACT THE MODERATOR AND TELL HIM SEVERAL PEOPLE ARE HAVING TROUBLE UPLOADING FILES. THIS IS REALLY TICKING ME OFF.]

REMEMBER, THIS IS ONLY A TEST PAGE, NOT AN OB!!

I figure if this is acceptable, this format could be used for the rest of the OBs.

Canadian Reserve Regiments

Thanks, Munster. Good stuff.

A couple questions -- on the Dutch, is it correct that much of the 5th Division lacks artillery battalions?

On the Canadians, with the Engineers, are the squadrons listed at the end independent or subsidiary to the above regiments?

Thanks,

Pat

The gaping hole here remains the French OOB -- it still remains mostly the same as that of the original document, although it has been expanded upon.

Here is something on the French OOB:

The correct composition of the 7th Armored Division (7ème Division Blindée) at Besancon is as following:

1er Régiment de Dragons (Lure)
5ème Régiment de Dragons (Valdahon)
3ème Régiment de Cuirassiers (Chenevières) -since July 1, 1985-
35ème Régiment d'Infanterie (Belfort)
170ème Régiment d'Infanterie (Epinal)
30éme Groupe de Chasseurs (Luneville) -since July 1, 1985-
1er Régiment d'Artillerie (Montbéliard)
60ème Régiment d'Artillerie (Canjuers) -since July 1, 1984- *reserve unit
19ème Régiment du Génie (Besancon)
7ème Régiment de Commandement et de Soutien (Besancon)
Escadron d'Eclairage Divisionnaire (Valdahon)

Information comes from the history of the french garrison Besancon.

In 1988 the french 5th Armored Division (Landau, GE) had the following units:

2 Régiment de Cuirassiers (Reutlingen, GE)
4 Régiment de Cuirassiers (Bitche, FR)
5 Régiment de Cuirassiers (Kaiserslautern, GE)
2 Groupe de Chasseurs (Neustadt, GE)
24 Groupe de Chasseurs (Tübingen, GE)
152 Régiment d'Infanterie (Colmar, FR)
2 Régiment d'Artillerie (Landau, GE)
24 Régiment d'Artillerie (Reutlingen, GE)
10 Régiment d'Génie (Spire, FR)
5 Régiment de Commandement et de Soutien (Landau, GE)
Escadron d'Eclairage Divisionnaire (Landau)

A few other comments:

The light armored regiment of the 3rd French Corps was the 2 Régiment de Hussards (AMX10RC)

The light armored regiment (4 Régiment de Chasseurs located at Gap, FR) of the french 27° Division Alpine had 3 escadrons with 12 AML 90 each (4 platoons a' 3 AML) and one anti-tank escadron with Jeeps / MILAN. In 1990 the AML 90 were replaced by ERC 90 SAGAIE.

Something on the teritorrial forces:

In the Military Region of Lille there were 3 Régiments interarmes divisionnaires (R.I.A.D.)

54ème R.I.A.D (Noyon)
239ème R.I.A.D. (Rouen)
243ème R.I.A.D. (Lille)

The light armored company of each of this regiments was a company of 5eme Régiment Hussards.
As far as I know the R.I.A.D. were dissolved at the end of 1992.

I hope that helps !

On the Dutch units I thinks the 51 AfdVa,52 AfdVA or 53 AfdVA were assigned to the 5th Division but I need confirmation on that
Im also trying to work out the engineer units of the Dutch army
On the Canadian units the engineer squadrons at the end were independent squadrons assigned to local brigades
Im also working out on some more info on us army support units and aviation units

I have it too -- the OOBs I believe come straight from Armies of NATOs Central Front, and despite the game's futuristic timeline, actually represents about 1984. Great game, though -- it was that game (and Red Storm Rising) that really got me interested in this period vice WWII.

Gents,

Question: Does anyone here live near Ft. McNair?

The reason I am asking is that I just a response back from the US Army Center of Military History.

I asked if they have a Unit Station List for the Army during the period 1985-1990. They said yes, but there are some gaps.

If anyone lives near McNair, they can visit there (they don't do research, nor do they do requests). You have to visit in person (arranged well in advance), then they will provide help in getting the material.

Copying costs are $0.15 each page.

I put in a similar request to the US Ari Force Historial Research Agency. No word back yet.

More on the German Orbat:

The divisional "Jägerbataillon" had no M113. They only had 2 ton trucks. There was an exception in the 6. Panzergrenadierdivision.
"Jägerbataillon" 66 and 67 were mounted on M113. This two battallions were active units while the battalions of the other divisions had to be mobilized.
The battalions consisted of a "Stabs- und Versorgungskompanie", 3 "Jägerkompanien" and a "Schwere Jägerkompanie" (Heavy) with towed mortars.

Information is from a former battalion commander of such an battallion.

The last one was a training unit for commandos which in wartimes formed an infantrie regiment.

As always, thanks for the info. Would that have formed part of the division, or would have it been an independent unit?

/major66

Are we sure that the both jaeger battalions in trucks was an ongoing and not timebound decision. I say this because multiple sources and previous posts by tanknetters suggest that 1 battalion had M113s and 1 trucks. Might it be that at the time the said former battalion commander was operating they were both trucks but this later changed?

I'll second this query and had been trying to find info on this myself. It looks like the 1 and 1 organization was definately the plan, but I'm not clear if it was ever implemented.

some new corrections on italians:
Agordo, Conegliano, Sondrio, Aosta, Asiago Heavy Artillery Groups are named Mountain Artillery Groups instead, though with heavy artillery.
Val Brenta Alpini Defense Battalion (cadre) has 14 Companies, not 4.
Ariete Armored Brigade has its command in Aviano, not Pordenone.

Pat

Where is your information from ?
I will check it.

The battalions No. 26, 27, 56 and 57 were definitly mounted on 2 ton trucks.
The chronicles of 4th, 7th, 10th and 11th divisions do not mention MTW's in their "Jägerbataillone".
Their main task was combat in urban and rough areas.

The 1 and 1 organization I know from the Heimatschutzbrigades 51 to 55.
The xx1 battalion was truck mounted and the xx2 had M113.
HSBrig 56, Neuburg/Donau had "Marder" in both battalions.

The battalions of HSBrig. of the 6-series were both truck mounted.
This brigades should operate against air-landings and breakthroughs.

The battalions of HSReg. were all truck mounted. Most of the trucks were in wartimes organized from civilian firms.
The HS-Regiments had the main task of "Raumschutz".

I am trying to look for more infos.
The battalion commander will be back in 2 weeks.

Besides that I found something new about the french territorial R.I.A.D.'s.
I will post it later.

Sure, although I'm pretty sure we had a long discussion about 4CMBG on tanknet not long ago.

For starters, in the timeframe of Pat's OB (1989) RCD had been replaced by 8th Canadian Hussars as the armoured regiment. 3RCR had been replaced by 2PPCLI as one of the two mech battalions. The M150 TOW had been replaced by TUA (TOWII). Additional manning allowed each mech battalion to permanently field 4 rifle companies, and the artillery regiment could field all 24 of its guns.
DemolitionMan
Ok, actually it was me who remarked about 8th CH being the replacement for RCD. No to the 2PPCLI, 3RCR returned back to Germany at the late 80s. The M150s being replaced by TUAs doesn´t change the numbers of vehicles-still 18 for each battalion. That the rifle cos and the battery were permanently filled up doesn´t change the equipment numbers too. Do you have any information about the CAST brigade concept? The OOB says nothing about it so I assumed it was dropped by 1988 or 1989?
konev
Pat,

Do you have an exact date for the US Air Force Active and Reserve formations?

The reason I have asking is this....if you can't get official documents, check the Yellow Pages, or in the case of the US Air Force, AFR 4-16 AIR FORCE ADDRESS DIRECTORY dated 1 March 1989.

Here's the link to it (its on line): http://www.usafpatches.com/pubs/afr4-16(1Mar89).pdf

[Hint, you got your work cut out for you smile.gifsmile.gifsmile.gif]

I noticed that 409 Squadron of the Canadian Air Force is still listed as being canadian-based. In fact it was stationed in Germany from 1985 onwards.
PCallahan
OK guys -- I'm starting to get through all of this now that I'm back from vacation. All good stuff.

Shrike -- any more from the file?

Thanks,

Pat
konev
Pat,

Save the US Air Force section for last and only if you have to. I'm working through the address directory (link posted eariler).
